Detoxification

Toxins Effect Us Every Day So Is Detox Necessary?

Detoxification or Detox consists of removal of toxic substances from the body using medicinal or psychological means. It is thought that the liver is the main mechanism of detoxing, although if the liver is overloaded it may fail, leading to serious medical problems.

Detox can also refer to a period of returning to homeostasis after long term addiction to drugs of various kinds, both recreational and medicinal. Medical detoxification includes dialysis, stomach pumping and chelation therapy for those with heavy metals. Sometimes drugs in the form of antidotes are given to detoxify the body as in the case of bites from spiders or snakes.

Many medical Doctors are suspicious of more natural detoxification methods. Some believe that detox is unnecessary, with the liver doing an excellent job. Regrettably the high incidence of liver failure and liver cancer makes you wonder at the wisdom of this point of view. Alternate medical practitioners often recommend detox diets as a way to detoxify the body. While this is effective, it can lead to auto-intoxification, or toxins being released into the blood stream causing further damage. On the other hand there are amazing results reported from those who have been on a detoxification diet. Many report felling younger and more alive afterwards.

One of the reasons Doctors are slow to accept the effectiveness of removing toxins as a means to preventing disease is the lack of long term large scale studies to back up claims. Rather than look at the Science and evidence, medical doctors often rely on research to make their opinions. Sometimes this leads to mistreatment due to ignorance.

In the end, detoxification is a wonderful way to help protect you against illness and disease, as now Scientists report toxins play a role in a large number of major illnesses. Better to take preventive measures than wait until your liver collapses.

Types of Detoxification

Alcohol detoxification

Alcohol detoxification is a process by which a heavy drinker’s system is brought back to normal after being used to having alcohol in the body continually. Serious alcohol addiction results in a downregulation of GABA neurotransmitter receptors. Precipitous withdrawal from long-term alcohol addiction without medical management can cause severe health problems and can be fatal. Alcohol detox is not a treatment for alcoholism. After detoxification, other treatments must be undergone to deal with the underlying addiction that caused the alcohol use.

Drug detoxification

Drug detoxification is used to reduce or relieve withdrawal symptoms while helping the addicted individual adjust to living without drug use; drug detoxification is not meant to treat addiction but rather an early step in long-term treatment. Detoxification may be achieved drug-free or may use medications as an aspect of treatment. Often drug detoxification and treatment will occur in a community program that lasts several months and takes place in a residential rather than medical center.

Drug detoxification varies depending on the location of treatment, but most detox centers provide treatment to avoid the symptoms of physical withdrawal to alcohol & other drugs. Most also incorporate counseling and therapy during detox to help with the consequences of withdrawal.

Metabolic detoxification

An animal’s metabolism can produce harmful substances which it can then make less toxic through reduction, oxidation (collectively known as redox reactions), conjugation and excretion of molecules from cells or tissues. This is called xenobiotic metabolism. Enzymes that are important in detoxification metabolism include cytochrome P450 oxidases, UDP-glucuronosyltransferases, and glutathione S-transferases. These processes are particularly well-studied as part of drug metabolism, as they influence the pharmacokinetics of a drug in the body.

Alternative medicine

Certain approaches in alternative medicine claim to remove “toxins” from the body through herbal, electrical or electromagnetic treatments (such as the Aqua Detox treatment). These toxins are undefined and have no scientific basis, making the validity of such techniques questionable. There is no evidence for toxic accumulation in these cases, as the liver and kidneys automatically detoxify and excrete many toxic materials including metabolic wastes. Under this theory if toxins are too rapidly released without being safely eliminated (such as metabolizing fat that stores toxins) they can damage the body and cause malaise. Therapies include contrast showers, detoxification foot pads, oil pulling, Gerson therapy, snake-stones, body cleansing, Scientology’s Purification Rundown, water fasting, and metabolic therapy.

The above does not express my opinion, only that in Wikipedia.

My Opinion

The opinion voiced by mainstream medicine, while well meaning, often is not in sync with the reality of life. Many medications and antibiotics are now being dumped due to ineffectiveness and or their toxic effects. When handing out toxic substances as treatments, it is understandable that medical doctors for the most part would question detox as a way to effective health improvement. Nevertheless, detoxification is your first point of call in regaining vital health. Toxins impede body systems and prevent your immune system functioning at full efficiency. There are safe, natural detoxification methods that are not extreme and cause no harm, while providing great benefits. Activated Liquid Zeolite is one such method.
